Michael Joseph Jackson (August 29, 1958 – June 25, 2009) was an American recording artist, entertainer and businessman. The seventh child of the Jackson family, he made his début to the professional music scene at the age of 11 as a member of The Jackson 5 in 1969, and began a solo career in 1971 while still a member of the group. Referred to as the “King of Pop“^[2] in subsequent years, his 1982 album Thriller is the world’s best-selling record of all time^[3] and four other solo studio albums are also among the world’s best-selling records: Off the Wall (1979), Bad (1987), Dangerous (1991) and HIStory (1995).

In the early 1980s, he became a dominant figure in popular music and the first African American entertainer to amass a strong crossover following on MTV. Jackson married twice and fathered three children, all of which caused further controversy. In 2005, Jackson was tried and acquitted of further sexual abuse allegations and several other charges.

Cordozar Calvin Broadus, Jr. (October 20, 1971), better known by his stage name Snoop Dogg (previously Snoop Doggy Dogg), is a Grammy Award-nominated American rapper, record producer, and actor. Snoop is best known as an MC in the West Coast hip hop scene, and for being one of producer Dr. Dre’s most notable protégés.

His mother nicknamed him “Snoopy” as a child because of the way he dressed and because of his love of the cartoon Peanuts. When he began recording, he took the stage name Snoop Doggy Dogg. He shortened his name to Snoop Dogg in 1998 when he left his original record label Death Row Records and signed with No Limit Records. He popularized the catch phrase suffix “-izzle,” a slang term developed by Oakland, California rap group 3X Krazy in the mid-1990s and used by Bay Area rapper E-40.

Dr. Dre began working with Snoop Dogg, first on the theme song of the feature film Deep Cover, and then on Dr. Dre’s debut solo album The Chronic with the other members of his former starting group, Tha Dogg Pound. Snoop Dogg’s contribution to The Chronic was considerable; the rapper’s rhymes were as present as Dr. Dre’s. Eminem made an appearance on Shade 45 in September 2008 in which he said, “Right now I’m kinda just concentrating on my own stuff, for right now and just banging out tracks and producing a lot of stuff. You know, the more I keep producing the better it seems like I get ’cause I just start knowing stuff.” It was around this time that Interscope finally confirmed the existence of a new Eminem album, with Spring 2009 later being stated as the period span in which the album is due. In December 2008, he gave more details on the album, which he recently reported was being titled Relapse. He said, “Me and Dre are back in the lab like the old days, man. Dre will end up producing the majority of the tracks on Relapse. We are up to our old mischievous ways … let’s just leave it at that.”

In March 2009, Eminem reported in a press release that he would be releasing two new albums this year. The first album, Relapse, is set for release on May 19, while the first official single and it’s music video are set for release on April 7. The second album, Relapse 2 doesn’t have a set release date yet, but Eminem is currently in the studio working on the album, and it should be released in the second half of this year. Eminem said in the press release, “we were on such a roll; we wound up with a ton of new music produced by Dre. Putting out Relapse 2 will let everyone get all of the best stuff.”

Luther Vandross – Love Songs (Album)

Born on the Lower East Side of Manhattan in New York City in the Smith Housing Project, Vandross began playing the piano at the age of three. He grew up in a musical family that moved to the Bronx when he was thirteen. His sister Patricia sang with vocal group The Crests^[3] who had a number two hit in 1958 with “Sixteen Candles”, though she left the group before the recording. Vandross’ father died of diabetes when Vandross was eight years old.

Luther Vandross was in a high school group, Shades of Jade, that once played at the Apollo Theater in Harlem. He was also a member of a theater workshop, “Listen My Brother” who released the singles, “Only Love Can Make a Better World” and “Listen My Brother”, and appeared on the second and fifth episodes of Sesame Street in November 1969.

Vandross attended Western Michigan University for a year before dropping out to continue pursuing a career in music.

His next recording credit was on an album by Roberta Flack in 1972. He was the founder of the first ever Patti LaBelle fan club. Luther also sang on Delores Hall’s Hall-Mark album from 1973. He sang with her on the song “Who’s Gonna Make It Easier For Me”, which he wrote. He also contributed another song, “In This Lonely Hour”. Having co-written “Fascination” for David Bowie’s Young Americans, he went on to tour with him as a back-up vocalist in September 1974. Vandross wrote “Everybody Rejoice” for the 1975 Broadway musical The Wiz; also appearing as a choir member in the movie.

Vandross also sang backing vocals for Diana Ross, Roberta Flack, Carly Simon, Chaka Khan, Donna Summer, Bette Midler, Chic, Barbra Streisand, and David Bowie.

ZZ Top is an American rock trio formed in late 1969 in Houston, Texas, US. The group members are Billy Gibbons (lead vocals, guitar), Dusty Hill (vocals, bass, keyboards), and Frank Beard (drums, percussion).

The band holds the distinction of being among the few rock bands still composed of its original recording members for nearly 40 years and until September 2006, the same manager/producer/image maker, Bill Ham.

ZZ Top reached peak commercial success in the 1970s and 1980s, scoring many hit songs during that era, but they remain together today and are still touring and releasing albums. ZZ Top was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on March 15, 2004. Summarizing their music, Cub Koda wrote, “As genuine roots musicians, they have few peers; Gibbons is one of America’s finest blues guitarists working in the hard rock idiom … while Hill and Beard provide the ultimate rhythm section support.” Their song lyrics often feature sexual innuendo and humor.

Nearly as well-known as their music is the group’s image: Gibbons and Hill are almost always pictured wearing sunglasses (a nod to their 1979 song “Cheap Sunglasses“), similar if not matching clothing, and their trademark chest-length beards (ironically, in spite of his own surname, Beard almost always sports just a mustache). In 1984, the Gillette Company reportedly offered Gibbons and Hill $1 million each to shave their beards for a television commercial but they declined, stating “We’re too ugly without ‘em”.

Tesla is an American hard rock band formed in Sacramento, California in 1984, and have sold over 16 million albums in the United States as of 2008.

The band formed in 1984 in Sacramento as City Kidd, and was renamed Tesla during the recording of their first album, 1986’s Mechanical Resonance, on the advice of their manager that City Kidd was not a great name. The band derived their name, certain album and song titles, and some song content from events relating to Nikola Tesla, an inventor and electrical engineer born in the 19th century.

The band’s original lineup consisted of lead vocalist Jeff Keith, guitarists Frank Hannon and Tommy Skeoch, bassist Brian Wheat, and drummer Troy Luccketta.

Tesla’s music is often referred to as heavy metal, but is better described as hard rock with a bluesy feel. The band’s lyrics also strayed from the themes popular in heavy metal, particularly in the 1980s at the beginning of their career. A further distinction from their contemporaries was their T-shirt-and-jeans image which was in strong contrast to Glam Metal bands of the time, which were characterized by big hair, leather pants, and flashy makeup. Also in the early days of their career, Tesla toured with David Lee Roth, Def Leppard, and Poison which incorrectly resulted in the band being categorized as a Glam metal band. The band’s members resented this labelling. Tesla has always been proud of the fact that their music has always been just guitars and drums, with an occasional piano from guitarist Hannon and/or bassist Wheat and occasional organ from Hannon, with no synthesizers or anything to distort their sound. Their albums always proudly proclaimed, “No Machines”, referring to that fact. However, the band’s 2004 album, Into the Now, does not include synthesized beats. Drummer Troy Luccketta cleverly designed his drum set to make it sound like synthesized beats, as seen on the Cuminatcha live 2008 DVD section on Troy’s gear.

It was three years before the band released their second album, The Great Radio Controversy. The album helped solidify the band’s growing reputation and fan base. The album produced the hit single “Love Song“.

In 1990, Tesla released Five Man Acoustical Jam, a live album featuring acoustic renditions of hits such as “Cumin’ Atcha Live”, “Gettin’ Better”, “Modern Day Cowboy”, and “Love Song”. The album also featured a number of covers most notably a version of “Signs“, a a 1971 hit by the Five Man Electrical Band.

In 1991 the band released their third studio album Psychotic Supper. The band themselves consider this to be their best album according to their official Web site. The 1998 Japanese reissue import of Psychotic Supper contains three previously unreleased songs, including “Rock the Nation”, “I Ain’t Superstitious”, and “Run Run Run”.

Ugly Kid Joe was an American hard rock band from Isla Vista, California. The band’s name is a pun on the band Pretty Boy Floyd. Ugly Kid Joe’s sound touched on a range of styles, including rock, hard rock, heavy metal, funk rock, funk, and thrash metal. In conclusion to the band’s overall sound and vision, the members of the band have cited many times, that they were simply a manifestation of their environment and lifestyles—mounting from their geographic location of Southern California.

Overview

The band enjoyed popularity in the early- to mid-1990s, with their mix of satirical humor and heavy metal sound. Their logo was a cartoon embodiment of an “ugly kid” wearing a backward baseball hat and giving the finger. Heavily influenced by Black Sabbath and AC/DC, they covered several of their songs, including “Sweet Leaf” and “N.I.B.“. They toured the United States several times—their second tour was in support of Scatterbrain, and later opening for former Black Sabbath lead vocalist Ozzy Osbourne.

The band honed their chops playing the vibrant Isla Vista UCSB street parties in the late 80s/early 90s (the band’s original name was Overdrive), before moving on to bigger venues in Los Angeles and beyond. Ugly Kid Joe first gained success with “Everything About You”, which peaked at #3 in the UK Singles Chart. Later the song was used in the movie Wayne’s World. Further singles did not fare as well, however the positive response to the band’s live performance of Harry Chapin’s “Cats in the Cradle” prompted a studio version, subsequently released as a well-received single that sold over 500,000 copies in the United States alone, and peaked at #7 in the UK Singles Chart.

Megadeth is an American heavy metal band led by founder, front man, guitarist, and songwriter Dave Mustaine. Formed in 1983 by Mustaine and bass player David Ellefson following Mustaine’s departure from Metallica, the band has since released eleven studio albums, six live albums, two EPs, thirty singles, thirty-two music videos, and three compilations.

As a pioneer of the American thrash metal movement, Megadeth rose to international fame in the 1980s, but experienced numerous line-up changes, due partly to the band’s notorious substance abuse problems. From 1983-2002, Mustaine and Ellefson were the only continuous members of the band. After finding sobriety and securing a stable line-up, Megadeth went on to release a string of platinum and gold albums, including the platinum-selling landmark Rust in Peace in 1990 and the Grammy nominated, multi-platinum Countdown to Extinction in 1992. Megadeth disbanded in 2002 after Mustaine suffered a severe nerve injury to his left arm. However, following extensive physical therapy, Mustaine reformed the band in 2004 and released The System Has Failed, followed by United Abominations in 2007; the albums debuted on the Billboard Top 200 chart at #18 and #8, respectively.

AC/DC is a rock band formed in Sydney, Australia by Angus and Malcolm Young in 1973. AC/DC are considered pioneers of hard rock and heavy metal they consider themselves rock n roll.

AC/DC got their name from their sister Margret’s sewing machine. “AC/DC” is an abbreviation for “alternating current/direct current”, which indicates that an electrical device can use either type of power. Angus and Malcolm felt this symbolized the bands energy, performances, and love for music so they kept the name. There have been rumers that AC/DC stands for Anti Christ/Devil’s Children or After Christ/Devil Comes.
Early Years of AC/DC

In November 1973, Malcolm and Angus Young formed AC/DC and recruited bassist Larry Van Kriedt, vocalist Dave Evans, and drummer Colin Burgess. AC/DC played their first gig at a club named Chequers in Sydney Australia on New Year’s Eve, 1973. They were later signed to the EMI-distributed Albert Productions label for Australia and New Zealand. The early line up of the band changed often, Colin Burgess was the first member fired, and several bassists and drummers came and gone during the next year.

The Young brothers decided that Evans was not a suitable frontman for the group, because they felt he was more of a glam rocker. On stage, Evans was occasionally replaced by the band’s first manager, Dennis Laughlin, who was the original lead singer with Sherbet. Meanwhile Ronald Belford “Bon” Scott, an experienced vocalist and friend of George Young’s, Angus and Malcolm’s other brother, was interested in becoming their vocalist.

In September 1974, Bon Scott replaced Dave Evans. The band had recorded only one single with Evans, “Can I Sit Next to You”. “Can I Sit Next to You” was re-recorded with Bon Scott under the title “Can I Sit Next to You Girl”.

By January 1975, the album High Voltage had been recorded. It took only ten days and was based on instrumental songs written by Angus and Malcolm, with lyrics added by Scott. A few months later, the lineup was stabilised which included singer Scott, guitarist Angus, guitarist Malcolm, bassist Mark Evans, and drummer Phil Rudd. Crimson Glory – Astronomica (Album)

Crimson Glory began life in Sarasota, Florida in 1982 under the moniker ‘Beowulf’. They rehearsed diligently, finding and developing their sound for almost four years before recording their self-titled debut album on Par Records in 1986. This would later be re-issued after signing on with their new label, Roadrunner Records. Tight dual-lead harmonies and soaring vocals would feature prominently on this release, as well as the follow-up, “Transcendence“.

In an era of sound-and-lookalike metal bands, Crimson Glory’s goal was to have themselves be immediately identifiable from the others, so they wore full-face metallic silver masks on-stage, as well as for all photo shoots and public appearances. The mystically-named vocalist, Midnight (real name: John Patrick McDonald jr.), was the exception to this, as his mask left his mouth uncovered.

Their sophomore release, “Transcendence” was a landmark and it garnered them much-deserved praise and attention, both at home and abroad. While on tour in support of their self-titled debut album, they discovered how hot the masks would be on stage. To keep the mystique, they cut them down into a partial “Phantom of the Opera” style. (However, after this tour, the masks would be permanently retired.)

Blind Guardian is a German heavy metal band formed in the mid-1980s in Krefeld, West Germany. The band is often credited as one of the seminal and most influential bands in power metal and speed metal subgenres, being part of the German heavy/speed/power metal scene that included Helloween, Running Wild, Accept, Grave Digger, Sinner, and Rage.

Blind Guardian lyrics, written by vocalist Hansi Kürsch, are inspired by the fiction of authors such as J. R. R. Tolkien, Stephen King, and Michael Moorcock, as well as traditional legends and epics. Over the years, a running theme has developed associating the band members with traveling bards.

Skid Row is an American heavy metal band, formed in 1986 in Toms River, New Jersey. They are named after Phil Lynott and Gary Moore’s first band. They were most successful in the late 1980s and early 1990s when their first two albums with lead singer Sebastian Bach and drummer Rob Affuso were multi-platinum successes. Their current line-up consists of Johnny Solinger (vocals), Dave “The Snake” Sabo, Scotti Hill (guitar), Rachel Bolan (bass) and Dave Gara (drums). As of the end of 1996 the band has sold over 20 million albums worldwide.

Slayer is an American thrash metal band from Huntington Park, California, formed in 1981. The band was founded by guitarists Jeff Hanneman and Kerry King. Slayer rose to fame as one of the leaders of the American thrash metal movement with their 1986 release, Reign in Blood, which has been called “the heaviest album of all time” by Kerrang!. Scorpions are a heavy metal/hard rock band from Hanover, Germany, probably best known for their 1980s rock anthem “Rock You Like a Hurricane” and their singles “No One Like You“, “Still Loving You“, and “Wind of Change“. The band has sold over 75 million albums worldwide and were ranked #46 on VH1’s Greatest Artists of Hard Rock program.

Rudolf Schenker, the band’s rhythm guitarist launched the band in 1965. At first, the band had beat influences and Schenker himself did the vocals. Things began to come together in 1969 when Schenker’s younger brother Michael and vocalist Klaus Meine joined the band. In 1972, the group recorded and released their debut album Lonesome Crow, with Lothar Heimberg on bass and Wolfgang Dziony on drums. During the Lonesome Crow tour, the Scorpions opened for upcoming British band UFO. Near the end of the tour, the members of UFO offered guitarist Michael Schenker the lead guitar job; an offer which he soon accepted. Uli Roth, a friend of the Schenker brothers, was then called in temporarily to finish off the tour.

Savatage is a progressive metal band founded by the brothers Jon and Criss Oliva in 1978 at Astro Skate in Tarpon Springs, Florida.
