Dion had first gained international recognition in the 1980s by winning both the 1982 Yamaha World Popular Song Festival and the 1988 Eurovision Song Contest.[4][5] Following a series of French albums in the early 1980s, she signed on to CBS Records Canada in 1986. Tim Smith (born 16 February, 1961 in Swindon) is and English broadcaster and radio personality in the U.K. He started out on university radio whilst studying in York. In 1984 he worked for several stations including BBC Radio York and BBC Radio Shropshire. In April 1989, after a short stint with BBC Radio WM, Tim went onto present the weekend early show from 5-7am on BBC Radio 1, where he remained until September 1990.

From then on, he went on to present the weekday afternoon show on BBC GLR, The GLR Picture Show & also presented a phone in pop quiz on the old BBC Radio 5, entitled Popcall, which he did for three years.

In the mid 1990s, Tim presented programmes for Magic 105.4 & the breakfast show on London’s Jazz FM. He joined BBC Radio 2 in 1999 as a co-presenter on Steve Wright in the Afternoon.

Tim can now be heard on BBC Radio Berkshire presenting a Saturday mid-morning programme, with fellow Radio 2 presenters Andrew Peach and Jonny Saunders.

In his spare time, he enjoys playing golf.

Twelve Girls Band (traditional Chinese: 女子十二樂坊; simplified Chinese: 女子十二乐坊; pinyin: Nǚzǐ shí’èr Yùefǎng, sometimes abbreviated to 女樂 or 女乐) is a music women artists group who started with twelve members but later become thirteen, that use traditional Chinese instruments to play both traditional Chinese and Western songs. Formed on June 18, 2001, the women were selected by audition from more than 4,000 contestants. Each woman is classically-trained, and the band members come from various conservatories in the People’s Republic of China (PRC), including the China Academy of Music, the Chinese National Orchestra, and the Central Conservatory of Music.Chinese numerology gave Wang Xiao-Jing the idea for the Twelve Girls Band. When the Xiao-Jing decided he wanted to create a woman ensemble, he knew it needed 12 members. Per Chinese mythology it is the twelve jinchai (12 hairpins) representing womanhood. The twelve women that Xiao-Jing assembled were experienced musicians from the People’s Republic of China’s orchestras, played traditional Chinese instruments, and all were in their twenties. For the new project, the women were inspired by the art of the Yue Fang, the ensembles who played in the Tang Dynasty courts during the years A.D. 618 to 907.

The group debuted their modern compositions on ancient instruments in China and Japan during the Northern summer of 2003. Word of mouth spread, show after show were sold-out, and in Japan their debut album topped the charts for 30 weeks. Their self-titled debut was released in North America in August 2004 with cover versions of Coldplay’s “Clocks” and Enya’s “Only Time” included, and a massive television advertising campaign announcing the group’s arrival.[2]

Among the instruments used by the women: erhu (Chinese fiddle), pipa (pear-shaped lute), guzheng (zither), yangqin (hammered dulcimer), dizi (transverse flute), and xiao (vertical flute). Occasionally, the duxianqin (single-stringed zither) and hulusi (three-piped gourd flute) are employed. More

Damn Yankees was an American hard rock supergroup.

The band was formed in 1989, consisting of Tommy Shaw of Styx, Jack Blades of Night Ranger, Ted Nugent of Amboy Dukes and his own solo career, and Michael Cartellone. Presumably inspired by the musical of the same name, Nugent once also explained that he coined the name because whenever someone asked him how he and Tommy Shaw would sound playing together, he would always reply by saying they would sound like “a bunch of damn Yankees.”^{[citation needed]}

Produced by rock producer Ron Nevison, the new band’s self-titled debut album went double-platinum in 1990. Ted Nugent’s well-tooled heavy blues guitar became a cornerstone, but Jack Blades and Tommy Shaw rose to the forefront as a potent vocal duo. Jack Blades’s leading single “Coming of Age,” hit #60 on the U.S. Hot 100, and #1 on the AOR charts, while Tommy Shaw’s “Come Again” received extensive AOR airplay.

1990’s rock ballad “High Enough” featured a passionate duet between Shaw and Blades, backed by a string section in the studio. Backed by a popular video, it rose to #3 on U.S. Hot 100, and #2 on AOR charts. Ironically, “High Enough” happened to be the first top ten pop single in Ted Nugent’s career, despite the fact his career had been built on his “Motor City Madman” image. In fact, Damn Yankees seemed to be following a similar course pursued by Jack Blades’s prior band, Night Ranger, developing an overall hard rock sound in the studio, but relying heavily on power ballads to sell their albums. Furthermore, their songs appeared on several Hollywood film soundtracks, such as Gremlins 2: The New Batch, John Candy’s comedic vehicle, Nothing But Trouble and the 1991 action movie The Taking of Beverly Hills.

After the release of their debut, the Damn Yankees went on a year-and-a-half world tour with the likes of a revamped Bad Company, Poison and Jackyl. Their U.S. tour coincided with the Persian Gulf War, in which the band unfurled American flags and made patriotic statements. Nugent’s onstage archery stunts lead to being arrested and fined after firing a burning arrow into an effigy of Saddam Hussein in Colorado.^{[citation needed]}

In 1992, Damn Yankees once again went platinum with their follow-up album Don’t Tread. The title song (sung by Jack Blades) enjoyed extensive coverage at the Barcelona Olympic Games. Ted Nugent also appeared on Rock the Vote, voicing support for the GOP against Bill Clinton. Although the second release was not as successful as the first album, it contained a few minor hits, such as “Mister Please,” “Where You Goin’ Now,” and “The Silence Is Broken,” a power ballad featured on the 1993 Jean-Claude Van Damme film Nowhere to Run.

As the band began working on a third album, Damon Johnson of Brother Cane was added as another guitarist. The move was necessary due to Shaw’s participation in Styx. If Shaw was unavailable Johnson would fill in as second guitarist. There was also talk that all three guitarists would play together when Shaw was available.

Michael Joseph Jackson (August 29, 1958 – June 25, 2009) was an American recording artist, entertainer and businessman. The seventh child of the Jackson family, he made his début to the professional music scene at the age of 11 as a member of The Jackson 5 in 1969, and began a solo career in 1971 while still a member of the group. Referred to as the “King of Pop“^[2] in subsequent years, his 1982 album Thriller is the world’s best-selling record of all time^[3] and four other solo studio albums are also among the world’s best-selling records: Off the Wall (1979), Bad (1987), Dangerous (1991) and HIStory (1995).

In the early 1980s, he became a dominant figure in popular music and the first African American entertainer to amass a strong crossover following on MTV. The popularity of his music videos airing on MTV, such as “Beat It“, “Billie Jean” and “Thriller” — widely credited with transforming the music video from a promotional tool into an art form — helped bring the relatively new channel to fame. Videos such as “Black or White” and “Scream” made Jackson an enduring staple on MTV in the 1990s. With stage performances and music videos, Jackson popularized a number of physically complicated dance techniques, such as the robot and the moonwalk. His distinctive musical sound and vocal style influenced many hip hop, pop and contemporary R&B artists. While Jackson was a member of Generation Jones ^[4][5], he had an impact on multiple generations.

Jackson donated and raised millions of dollars for beneficial causes through his foundation, charity singles and support of 39 charities. Other aspects of his personal life, including his changing appearance and behavior, generated significant controversy, damaging his public image. Though he was accused of child sexual abuse in 1993, the criminal investigation was closed due to lack of evidence and Jackson was not charged. The singer had experienced health concerns since the early 1990s and conflicting reports regarding the state of his finances since the late 1990s. Jackson married twice and fathered three children, all of which caused further controversy. In 2005, Jackson was tried and acquitted of further sexual abuse allegations and several other charges.

One of the few artists to have been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame twice, his other achievements include multiple Guinness World Records—including one for “Most Successful Entertainer of All Time”—13 Grammy Awards, 13 number one singles in his solo career, more than any other male artist in the Hot 100 era, and the sale of 750 million records worldwide.^[6] Jackson’s highly publicized personal life, coupled with his successful career, made him a part of popular culture for almost four decades. Avenged Sevenfold (sometimes stylized as A7X) is an American rock band from Huntington Beach, California, formed in 1999. The band has achieved mainstream success with their 2005 album City of Evil, which included singles such as “Burn It Down”, “Bat Country,” “Beast and the Harlot” and “Seize the Day.” The band’s success followed with their self-titled album, with singles such as “Critical Acclaim”, “Almost Easy”, “Afterlife”, “Scream”, and “Dear God”.

Inception (1999-2004)

The band was formed in 1999 in Huntington Beach, California with original members M Shadows, Zacky Vengeance, The Rev, and Matt Wendt. M Shadows came up with the name as a reference to the story of Cain and Abel from The Bible, although it is not a religious band.[1] Upon its formation, each member of the band also took on a pseudonym which were already nicknames of theirs from high school.[2] The band released two demos in the years 1999 and 2000. Avenged Sevenfold’s debut album, Sounding the Seventh Trumpet, was recorded when the band members were just eighteen years old and in high school. It was originally released on their first label, Good Life Recordings in 2001. After lead guitarist Synyster Gates joined the band, the introductory track “To End The Rapture” was re-recorded featuring a full band element. The album was subsequently re-released on Hopeless Records in 2002.

The band started to receive recognition, sharing the stage with metal acts like Mushroomhead and Shadows Fall and playing on the Take Action Tour.[3][4] Having settled on their fourth bassist, Johnny Christ, they released Waking the Fallen on Hopeless Record in August 2003. The band received profiles in Billboard and The Boston Globe, and played in the Vans Warped Tour.[5][6][7] In 2004, Avenged Sevenfold toured again on the Vans Warped Tour and recorded a video for their song “Unholy Confessions” which went into rotation on MTV2’s Headbanger’s Ball.[8] Shortly after the release of Waking the Fallen, Avenged Sevenfold was signed to Warner Bros. Records.

City of Evil (2005–2007)

City of Evil, the band’s third album, was released on June 7, 2005 and debuted at #30 on the Billboard Top 200 selling over 30,000 copies.[9][10] It utilized a more epic, classic metal sound than Avenged Sevenfold’s previous albums, which had been grouped into the metalcore genre.[11][12] The album is also notable for the absence of screaming vocals; M. Shadows worked with vocal coach Ron Anderson — whose clients have included Axl Rose and Chris Cornell — for months before the album’s release to achieve a sound that had “grit while still having the tone.[13][11]

They returned to the Vans Warped Tour, this time headlining, and then continued on their own “Cities of Evil Tour.”[14] In addition, their lead single “Bat Country” reached #2 on Billboard’s Mainstream Rock Charts, #6 on Billboard’s Modern Rock Charts, and the accompanying video made it to #1 on MTV’s Total Request Live.[15] Propelled by this success, the album sold well and became Avenged Sevenfold’s first gold record. Linkin Park is an American rock band from Agoura Hills, California. Since its formation in 1996, the band has sold more than 50 million albums^[2] and won two Grammy Awards.^[3][4] It achieved mainstream success with its debut album, Hybrid Theory, which was certified Diamond by the RIAA in 2005.^[5] Its following studio album, Meteora, continued the band’s success, topping the Billboard 200’s album charts in 2003, and was followed by extensive touring and charity work around the world.^[6] In 2003, MTV2 named Linkin Park the sixth greatest band of the music video era.^[7]

Having adapted the nu metal and rapcore genres to a radio-friendly yet densely-layered style in Hybrid Theory and Meteora,^[8][9][10] the band explored other genres in their next studio album, Minutes to Midnight.^[11][12] The album topped the Billboard charts and had the third best debut week of any album that year.^[13][14] They have also collaborated with several other artists, most notably with rapper Jay-Z in their mashup album Collision Course, and many others on Reanimation.^[9]

Early years (1996–1999)

Originally consisting of three high school friends, Linkin Park’s foundation was anchored by Mike Shinoda, Brad Delson, and Rob Bourdon.^[1] After graduating from high school, the California natives began to take their musical interests more seriously, recruiting Joe Hahn, Dave “Phoenix” Farrell, and Mark Wakefield to perform in their band, Xero. Though limited in resources, the band began recording and producing songs within Shinoda’s make-shift bedroom studio in 1996.^[1][15] Tensions and frustration within the band grew after they failed to land a record deal.^[1] The lack of success and stalemate in progress prompted Wakefield, at that time the band’s vocalist, to leave the band in search for other projects.^[1][15] Farrell also left to tour with Tasty Snax and other bands.^[16][17]

After spending a considerable time searching for Wakefield’s replacement, Xero recruited Arizona vocalist Chester Bennington. Jeff Blue, the vice president of Zomba Music, had referred him to the band in March 1999.^[18] Bennington, formerly of Grey Daze, became a standout among applicants because of his unique singing style. The band changed its name from Xero to Hybrid Theory.^[16] The newborn vocal chemistry between Shinoda and Bennington helped revive the band, inciting them to work on new material.^[1] The band’s renaissance culminated with a change in name; from Hybrid Theory, the band changed its name to Linkin Park, a play on and homage to Santa Monica’s Lincoln Park.^[1] However, despite these changes, the band still struggled to sign a record deal. After facing numerous rejections from several major record labels, Linkin Park turned to Jeff Blue for additional help. After failing to catch Warner Bros. The Grammy Nominees is a series of various artists compilation albums. Albums are released before the airing of the annual Grammy Awards. All of the songs on the albums are Grammy nominated in the year released. The first one of these albums was released in 1995 and has been released every year since to date. Each one through the 2007 edition has been certified Gold by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), while the 1996 and 2000 editions have also been certified Platinum.[1]

Formed in 1984, Enuff Z’Nuff soon grew a live following and recorded their first demo songs, some of which would be officially released only much later in their career. The band’s first single, “Fingers On It,” received some recognition when it was featured in the 1986 cult movie Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer.

By 1989, Enuff Z’Nuff had released their first major label offering, a self-titled debut album on Atco Records, with founding members Donnie Vie and Chip Z’Nuff being joined by guitarist Derek Frigo and drummer Vik “Vikki” Foxx. They had two minor hits on this debut recording with the psychedelic-flavored pop rock songs “New Thing” and “Fly High Michelle”, which both received steady airplay on MTV. The band’s heavy glam rock appearance in their videos was later parodied on MTV’s Beavis & Butthead.

For their follow-up album, 1991’s Strength, the band tried to tone-down their glam image. It was released in 1991 to strong reviews, including Rolling Stone magazine calling the group “The hot band of the year.”[citation needed] There were promotional videos for the singles “Mother’s Eyes” and “Baby Loves You,” as well as an appearance on The Late Show with David Letterman. However, this follow-up album did not sell nearly as well as their first.

The band filed bankruptcy and left Atco Records, but soon after this event, the band was picked up by Clive Davis’ Arista Records label for their 1993 album Animals With Human Intelligence. This release, much like Strength, received some critical acclaim, but ultimately failed commercially. Before the album’s release, drummer Vikki Foxx quit the band to join Vince Neil’s solo band. He was replaced by New Jersey resident and former “War & Peace” member Ricky Parent. After Enuff Z’Nuff was dropped from Arista, guitarist Derek Frigo parted ways with the band. Despite these setbacks, the band has continued touring and recording up until the present, releasing albums on several independent labels, and also finding a solid fanbase overseas. Faith No More is an American alternative metal band from San Francisco, California, formed in 1981 by bassist Billy Gould, keyboardist Roddy Bottum and drummer Mike Bordin.^[2] The band is best known for combining elements of heavy metal, funk, progressive rock, hip hop, hardcore punk, thrash metal, and jazz, among many others,^[3] and have been hailed as an influential rock band.^[2][4]

Faith No More underwent several line-up changes before releasing their first album, We Care a Lot, in 1985. Membership remained stable until vocalist Chuck Mosley was replaced by Mike Patton in 1988. In 1989, the band released their highly successful album, The Real Thing, which featured their breakthrough hit single “Epic“. The band’s next album, 1992’s Angel Dust, was also highly successful and spawned the hit “Midlife Crisis“, which became their sole #1 hit on the Modern Rock Tracks chart in their career. Faith No More declined in popularity after longtime guitarist Jim Martin left the group in 1994 and was replaced by Mr. Bungle guitarist Trey Spruance. After the release of their next album, 1995’s King for a Day… Fool for a Lifetime, Spruance was replaced briefly by Dean Menta, who would eventually be replaced by their current guitarist Jon Hudson. After releasing one more album, Album of the Year, in 1997, Faith No More broke up in April 1998, and all members began work on side projects since then.

On February 24, 2009, Faith No More announced that they would be reforming for a European tour with the same lineup before their break up.^[5] In June 2009, they performed together for the first time in eleven years at the Brixton Academy in London, England. The band has continued to perform at multiple live venues since.^[6] The tour may be followed by a possible new studio album.^[7]
